Christian Universalism – Ohio

Although started in New England in 1770, Universalism rapidly spread west, arriving in Ohio in earnest by the turn of the century. In 1850, there were at least 163 Universalist churches in Ohio. For t he most part the Universalism appealed to factory workers and those living in rural areas. There were some exceptions, many industrialists and business people embraced Universalism, businessman John R. Buchtel of Akron for example. By the first quarter of the 1900s the Christian Universalist Church in Ohio was in decline.

A good source of early Christian Universalism in Ohio is Rev. Elmo Arnold Robinson's The Universalist Church in Ohio (Ohio Universalist Convention, 1923).
