When I recall my childhood, one of the memories is that of a pineapple ice cream soda imbibed at the local drugstore soda fountain. As I grew older the soda fountain remained part of my life. Hanging out with friends and dates, and sometimes just by myself. In college, during the summers I tended a soda fountain.
I feel sorry for the kids today. The old fashion drugstore style soda fountains are few and far apart.
Fortunately, there are some around. There are still a few drugstores boasting a soda fountain counter and maybe a booth or two. Some remain and still function in what was once a drugstore. Occasionally you will come across an old revived general store with a soda fountain counter. Or maybe an old fashion ice cream parlor with a soda fountain counter. Some soda fountains are re-creations, but that’s okay too. The experience is still there.
I am still drawn to soda fountains. These days, mostly to photograph. But once in a while, I will cozy up to the counter, climb on the stool, and order a pineapple ice cream soda.
