Christmas

At The

Writer's Cabin

"The Writer's Cabin"
Salado, Texas

This little Salado, Texas one-room cabin was built ca. 1924 as a place for the Hutchin family to sell, or more often, give away the produce they grew. The nearby family home, a Sears & Roebuck Catalog purchase, was known throughout town as a place where warm hospitality and lively music was always to be found, especially so at Christmas. Ruby, the mother of the house could really tickle the ivories, especially on the old home piano. More than once, we are told, Ruby’s Sunday morning piano playing shook the Baptist church to its foundation. Eustice, the father of the house, was given to interviewing the old-timers in a way that produced untold tales, which he wrote down verbatim, to which Eustace added graphic and emotional detail.

Soon the little cabin was converted into a retreat for his writing. And even though the main home was gaily decorated for Christmas, it is said, that at Christmas one could always find the Yule Log burning, the tree decorated, a warm drink, and welcoming hospitality in the Writer's Cabin.

The cabin was moved from its original Main Street location to the Salado Historical Society grounds in 2015 and restored in 2017. This photo was taken in 2019.
