Railroad Bridges

'Foggy Bridge' Buchannan Dam, Texas
Foggy Morning
Buchannan Dam, Texas

Without the railroad bridge there would be no railroads, or at least railroads that went anywhere. The development of the railroad bridge is closely tied to the growth of the railroad. Stronger bridges, different structures, meant longer spans.

Stationary, lift, swing, or raised; stone, wood, iron, steel, brick or concrete, railroad bridges are not only an engineering feat, but also a work of beauty ... even the rusty ones. Perhaps, even more so.

This album celebrates the beauty of railroad bridges and (as Richard J. Cook states in The Beauty of Railroad Bridges) "their ability to combine that symmetry with a necessary practicability: the movement of restless trains."
