Although there were earlier hymnals, Hymns, Composed by Different Authors was the first Universalist Church hymnal published by the Convention. The editors of the hymnal were: Hosea Ballou, Abner Kneeland and Edward Turner. The hymnal contains words only.
The very first printed in America was reprint of James Relly's Christian Hymns (1776). In 1792 The Universalist Church published Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: selected and original. Hymns, Composed by Different Authors was published as the Christian Universalist Church was undergoing a growth spurt and must have sold well as it was reprinted just two years later. Another hymnal, A Collection of Hymns, for the Christian Church and Home, was published by the General Convention in 1843.
