
Introduction:
On the One Hundredth Anniversary of the First Sermon of Rev. John Murray in that Town. Delivered in the Independent Christian Church, November 11, 1874.
The anniversary sermon was deliver by the Rev. Richard Eddy, D.D, who was the pastor of the church at that time. Between the discourse and the printing, Rev. Eddy "discover and utilize several important documents which were not available at the time of
delivering the Historical Discourse." This new material was added as an appendix.
Richard Eddy, D.D. (21 June 1828 – 16 August 1906) was born at Providence, R. I. In addition to pastoring several Universalist churches and writing a two volume work on Universalism, Dr. Eddy was a chaplain for the Sixtieth New York Volunteers during the American Civil War. From 1877 to 1906 he was president of the Universalist Historical Society and from 1886 to 1891 he was editor of the Universalist Register.
