The Empty Space — Space, has long been an enigma to me. Our definitions vary according to context. The Empty Space is a blog about space in its many forms. The astute reader will realize that Peter Brook is the inspiration for the title, but rather than theater, this blog is about space, simple & complex, although the theater is certainly included. Reflections on Living in the Borderlands — To live in the Borderlands means you are neither fully of the world, nor fully of religion.... You can be a a half-breed, citizen of both, or you can be an envoy of another kingsdom. Caught in the crossfire between ideologies. To survive the Borderlands you must live sans borders. Be a crossroad. [With apologies to Gloria Anzaldua for my rewriting of La Frontera (194)] Go to Reflections RSS Feed Essay Index |

The Oxcart: Food for the Journey — The Oxcart is a metaphor for the journey. In the metaphor we are the ox stumbling over the ruts in the road while struggling to pull our baggage along behind us. The Oxcart is about the journey in all of its aspects: pilgrimage, community, doing acts of mercy and justice, and walking humbly in spirit before our Creator. Flâneur: The musings of a wandersmänner— The term flâneur comes from the French masculine noun flâneur ("stroller", "lounger", "saunterer", "loafer"), which itself comes from the French verb flâner, meaning "to stroll". Charles Baudelaire developed a derived meaning of flâneur– that of "a person who walks the city in order to experience it". The flâneur at the turn of the 20th c., although bourgeois, the flâneur was deeply concerned about the quality of urban life for the masses. Today the term, "flâneur," is often used refer to an understanding of the urban phenomena. The blog, Flâneur, is about both the phenomena and the "writing of the urban narrative," e.g., those stories inherent to urban space, observing the unobserved. Go to Flâneur RSS Feed Essay Index |

The Photo League— Created in 1936 by photographers Sid Grossman and Sol Libsohn, The Photo League viewed photography as a tool for social change, believing that photographers should "illuminate & record the communities within which they lived." The Photo League was shut down in 1951 after being designated by the NY attorney general as a "Communist front," which of course, it wasn't. I seek to use photography as a tool to both glean and plant seeds of social change. Go to Photo League RSS Feed Photo Essay Index |
